Did you know that one mature tree can absorb about 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year? It’s just one tree, so it’s important to combat climate change. An interesting fact is that forests absorb 7.6 billion metric tons of carbon every year, which is equivalent to a third of the carbon dioxide emissions produced by humans! This makes forests one of the most powerful tools in our fight against climate change. World Tree Day is a time that can mobilize the international community collectively to fight climate change.

World Tree Day was initiated by Julius Sterling Morton, a nature lover from the United States, he persistently campaigned for the tree planting movement. Morton (1832-1902) and his wife, Caroline Joy French, in 1854 moved from Michigan to newly formed Nebraska, a region devoid of trees. He tries to encourage residents to plant trees to preserve the environment and beautify the residential area where he lives. On April 10, 1872, he proposed setting aside a day to plant trees.
Then it was agreed that World Tree Day would be celebrated every November 21. The first Tree Day celebration was held in Spain. When to commemorate this, many parties carried out tree planting movements. The world calls it Arbor Day. Arbor is taken from Latin which means tree. The purpose of celebrating World Tree Day is to remind people of the importance of trees for the lives of living creatures. The existence of trees combats global warming, prevents floods, landslides, provides a place for fauna (birds) to live and creates a good microclimate.
APP manages a well-mainted industrial plantation area in Perawang, Riau, covering an extensive area of 300,000 hectares.
Recognising that halting deforestation alone is insufficient to achieve it’s sustainability vision, APP adopted the Forest Conservation Policy (FCP) in 2013. This policy reflects the understanding that traditional forest conservation methods is no longer adequate and that merely protecting concession areas does not address broader sustainability challenges.
APP extends its efforts beyond the boundaries of its concession areas by considering the opportunities, threats, and broader impacts within the surrounding landscape. This approach allows the implementation of FCP and further APP’s ambition to end deforestation. Such initiatives actively contribute to global environmental movements, such as supporting the World Tree Day campaign, underscoring dedication to sustainable forestry and ecological conservation.
